Within a few years, it’ll be rare to find anyone without a smartphone. It’s nearly impossible to even purchase a standard flip-phone anymore. The Internet and You

search engine marketingThe Internet: many of us have heard of it, but few know what it is. The fact that you are reading this right now is a positive sign. Let’s go over some internet basics.

The internet was invented by Bill Gates and Al Gore sometime in the 1980s. Back then Gates and Gore were just two Silicon Valley nerds who communicated on calculators tied together with copper wire (called the “copperlator”). Advancement in calculator technology led to the first computer, which Gore dreamed about and then built. Some years (and a lot of copper wire) later the internet evolved into what it is today.

Today the internet is  a shopping mall, a black market, a way crazy people can espouse their views, and a source of confusion and frustration for the elderly.

But what does this mean for you and your business?

Current economic trends have probably led to the closing of any shopping malls or stores in your area. If you want to sell anything you will need to utilize online marketing. Not to pressure you, but everybody is doing it. If you don’t utilize search engine marketing your business is liable to go the way of the stores that use to exist where you live.

Al Gore would be thrilled, had he lived to see this day.

Matt Cutts – How to rank for Keywords!

Some Keys to Choosing and Using Keywords

SEO strategizing takes patience.

You set your goal. You decide who you want your target audience to be. You research to discover what your competitors are currently offering them, and then, carefully,  you determine the SEO strategy that will make your company more attractive to them.

This is where we talk about keywords.

Only the right keywords will open the lock you’re trying to open. You don’t want to jangle a heavy key ring, trying one key after the next to no avail, wasting time and effort, not to mention money.

As you choose your keywords, here are some points to consider:

  • Do you want to use long-tail or shorter-tail keywords? (Long-tail keywords target a more specific and relevant market, with less competition than shorter-tail keywords.)
  • Do your keywords accurately represent what you’re selling?
  • How are the search volumes for the keywords you want to target?

Once you’ve chosen smart keywords, remember:

  • You can’t just float keywords in the ether. The content that your keywords appear in will attract more search engines and internet users if it is high-quality, fresh and interesting. Even robots know spam when they see it.
  • Who you hang around with reflects on you. You build a trustworthy reputation with search engines when you consistently link to relevant, quality websites.

Smart design means smart internet marketing

It’s important to focus on links and keywords in your SEO and smart internet marketing strategies – but don’t forget site design in the process. Smart site design will help your website achieve good rankings in search results.

First of all, it’s important to have good, readable text on your website’s homepage; this helps a search engine find your site. A site designed entirely in Flash is not good because text in Flash files often become embedded in images, which are not read by search engines. That means a search engine won’t be able to recognize your all-important links and keywords.

You want to create a website with a logical and well-organized hierarchy – that means a home page with clear categories and sub-categories. Hierarchies are essential for websites with lots of pages and can be achieved by using breadcrumbs, HTML site maps, and logical directory and URL structures.

Make sure you give your web pages unique titles which show that your site has varied content. If you start every page with your company’s name, your site will be penalized in search results.

Finally, keep the content on your website fresh by performing regular updates. Don’t just create a site and forget about it. After a while, a search engine will pay less attention to your site and give fresher sites priority in the search rankings.

Smart internet marketing companies can provide advice on the design of your website and help you achieve better results.

How To Use Twitter Lists Effectively

We knew it wouldn’t be long before Twitter came up with a new feature…Twitter Lists. But like all new features, users have to learn how to use them effectively, and more importantly, how to use them with a Twitter account in conjunction with your internet marketing plan.

So what exactly are Twitter Lists? Basically you create a Twitter List named whatever you like, “My Fave Tweeters” for example, and you can add people to those lists and make those lists visible or invisible. For example, if you create list named “People I Should Unfollow” you probably wouldn’t want to make that lists visible, and only you would be able to see that lists.

So how exactly does this benefit you or your potential customers? This is where the creativity begins to flow. Let’s say you own an online bookstore and you are promoting a new author. You can create a Twitter List named “Friends Who Would Love John Doe’s New Book”. Once you make that lists visible, people you add to the list, which should be tweeters who have bought books from you before or are interested in books, will be notified on their homepage.

Once they see they’ve been listed, they’ll be flattered and probably check out the new book on your website.

Another cool feature is the ability to use the url of that list in your internet marketing plans. Let’s say you wanted to let other people on your website know exactly who are on the “Love John Does’ New Book” list. You can copy the url of that list and include it into your webpage for another level of interaction. Usually people just use their Twitter urls to promote Twitter, but now there are more ways to use Twitter to promote your interest and more importantly, your business.

Is Your Website Hindering Your SEO?

Good or bad…SEO affects your website. If you are having problems climbing above your competition it’s time to take a close look at your website and decide if its affecting your SEO.
There are a few things that your website should NOT have:

1. Too Many Images. Images are great and they allow you to have a great looking website but search engines don’t recognize links that are mad in graphics. Text format links are much better.

2. Flash. You can use it but use it creatively. Allowing flash to be one part of your website just for eye candy is a great idea. The rest of your website should be plain text.

3. Invisible Text. Search engines hate this so don’t do it or you will be put on a black list.

4. Search Engine Vision. Oxymoron? Nope. Build your site for you users not for a search engine and the search engine will like you better. This means to leave doorway and gateway pages behind.

5. Randomly Place Keywords. Smart internet marketing comes into play here. You picked your keywords and that’s great, but you still should put them in the right places including your Title tag.

6. Bad Links. Swapping links with a banned website is like supporting the bad neighbor with the trash in his yard. Reciprocal links are great as long as they are relevant links to good websites
Sometimes bad SEO can effect the best of us. But if you stay informed you will know what’s right and what’s wrong and you won’t have to start all over.
