Search Engine Marketing, Internet Advertising Services and more!

A lot of people decide to get into the search engine optimization game expecting immediate results, this is misguided. It seems strange that people who have built up some important businesses would be so impatient with any process. If anyone should know something about being patient with a process it is the small business person.

Anyone who has ever decided to start a business would be silly to assume that profits and success would come easily. They know that these things take time, as do all things worth doing. The same is true of developing a web presence and making your way upwards in Google rankings. When you hire an SEO company they begin a slow but steady process that includes a wide array of services on a number of platforms. For all of those to converge and lead to some fantastic search rankings is going to take time.

As in all building national and local internet marketing is all about reputation building with both customers and the services (search engines) driving those customers to your site. As your reputation for offering valuable content on the internet grows so too will your ranks and then with that your customer base and web presence. But patience is the most important thing.

search engine agencyThe other night I was talking with a new friend, who challenged a pedantic fact I threw out. With the help of Google I told him that I had found an answer. “From where? Wikipedia?” he asked.

“No, from a medical journal.”

“Yeah, but how do we know that this medical journal is legitimate?”

“It’s the first hit on Google!”

“Yeah but how does Google know that this journal is legitimate?”

Here I smiled. “I’m glad you asked. As a matter of fact, this is my industry, I work for an SEO company. Google used to determine legitimacy through links on the internet. But after a few years people figured it out and wound up spamming links onto forums. That’s why Google changes its algorithm every couple of years so no one manipulates it.”

“So what’s their algorithm now?”

“Well, it’s based on quality, of course. And quality often means fresh new content that’s well-written and accurate, links to other sites around the web, general popularity in terms of Twitter and Facebook, and a bunch of other factors no one except Google really knows.”

“So if I do those few things, my website will start to show up and eventually could be number one on Google?”

“Well it’s a lot of work, and it helps to have a search engine agency doing it since they have a better idea of what to do, but yeah, eventually you could be number one.”

I think I made a new friend.

search engine marketingThe Internet: many of us have heard of it, but few know what it is. The fact that you are reading this right now is a positive sign. Let’s go over some internet basics.

The internet was invented by Bill Gates and Al Gore sometime in the 1980s. Back then Gates and Gore were just two Silicon Valley nerds who communicated on calculators tied together with copper wire (called the “copperlator”). Advancement in calculator technology led to the first computer, which Gore dreamed about and then built. Some years (and a lot of copper wire) later the internet evolved into what it is today.

Today the internet is  a shopping mall, a black market, a way crazy people can espouse their views, and a source of confusion and frustration for the elderly.

But what does this mean for you and your business?

Current economic trends have probably led to the closing of any shopping malls or stores in your area. If you want to sell anything you will need to utilize online marketing. Not to pressure you, but everybody is doing it. If you don’t utilize search engine marketing your business is liable to go the way of the stores that use to exist where you live.

Al Gore would be thrilled, had he lived to see this day.

Search Engine Optimization(SEO) is a useful tool for any business. It gets your name ranked in Google so that traffic to your site increases.  As you build an online presence it only makes sense that you keep track of it. You can use tools like Alexa and the Google toolbar to check on your current ranking. If you’re running a blog you should also notice which posts generate the most traffic and see where they rank and what keywords were used to get it there. If you’re in need of keywords to help advertise business, look toward Google Adwords.

Also, add your site to search engine indexes. Search engines use crawlers (sometimes referred to as spiders) to browse for pages. Basically if you’re generating good content, rankings, and linking the amount of times your site is crawled will increase. Overall this will help you. It’s a way of creating faster searches and up-to-date data.

However, keywords are your best friends when you want to get search engine’s attention. titles, content, links, and image names can all include keywords. Just be sure that you use them wisely. They must be appropriate and they must be used effectively. Too many will get your material labeled as spam, too little won’t get your page noticed. Also, link internally to pages with keywords or relevant text. The more you link to your own site, the more traffic each page will get.

Other good practices are to add image descriptions, avoid flash and other media that isn’t used by every format. Link to associates. Having an alliance will boost both of your reputations. When you’ve build yourself a cornerstone and these foundations it’s time to keep traffic going through social media sites, like Twitter. Good luck!

search engine marketing

Done any Googling lately? If so, you might have noticed a subtle change amid your search results — the Pay-Per-Click search engine marketing advertisements, normally known as “Sponsored Listings,” are now labeled as “Ads.”

It’s short, it’s punchy, it’s vaguely hip. But what will the new “Ads” label mean for PPC advertising? Good things, apparently. Search Engine Agency reported that CTR (Click Through Rates) have jumped 11.4% since the switch. Nice.

Why would “Ads” inspire more clicks than “Sponsored Listings”? It’s hard to define exactly, but “Ads” just sounds better. The word “sponsored” has always had awkward connotations — as in, “And now a word from our sponsors…” — and we’re glad to see Google moving in a different direction.

search engine marketingIf you’re working on an onsite search engine marketing campaign, adding the rel=”me” attribute to your HTML repertoire is a must. Unlike rel=”nofollow” — which tells search engines to ignore certain links — rel=”me” conveys to search engines “Hey, I’m linking to another site that I own.”

When should you use rel=”me”? When you’re linking to your Facebook profile, your Twitter, your offsite blog. With rel=”me”, you can teach Google to associate your social profiles with your primary domain — all without giving up any of your precious link juice. Because at Ajax Union, we’re all about preserving link juice.

A sample rel=”me” link would look like this:

<a href=”http://www.facebook.com/ajaxunion” rel=”me”>Ajax Union Facebook</a>

You can also use rel=”me nofollow”, which will tell Google not to follow your link, while still alerting it of your social profile.

Confused about all these attributes? HTML can seem like a foreign language, but that’s why it pays to hire an SEO company. Check out AjaxUnion.com to explore our web services.

In search engine marketing, creating and distributing press releases is a great way to build backlinks for your website, in addition to branding your company through direct exposure. A lot of people find press releases intimidating, but they’re actually very easy to write — no J-school required.

To get started, let’s take a look at 5 simple rules for creating SEO press releases:

1. Quote Smart

Although press releases are usually pretty formal, you can spice up your text by adding a few good quotes —shoot for the opinionated, funny, passionate, or otherwise compelling. Many PR engines grab pull-out quotes by choosing text within quotation marks, so be sure to keep your quotes in logical chunks. Don’t say:

“Our business,” Steve began, “is to be the best search engine agency in NY.”

Otherwise, you might get stuck with a pull-out quote that says only “your business.” You also want to avoid putting individual “words” in quotes in your text — if you need to use quotation marks for emphasis, use single quotes.

2. Mind Your Media

Every PR service is different, but many of them allow video and/or image attachments, in addition to inset links, possibly with keywords. For optimum business marketing, be sure to take advantage of these factors whenever possible.

search engine marketingThe first rule of search engine marketing? Don’t talk about Fight Club. The second? Never let an opportunity pass you by. Every line of code, every social profile — it’s all a chance to promote yourself online.

Take the Ajax Union 404 page. Of course, all of our links are flawless, but you can get there by attempting to travel to something silly, like www.ajaxunion.com/great-white-sharks-are-awesome.

Some 404 pages just say “We couldn’t find the page you were looking for,” or similar, but not ours. Our 404 page includes:

  • A video
  • Links to our blog, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Youtube, and Tumblr
  • Our phone number
  • Unparalleled wit

Pretty neat, huh? Next time you’re designing a website, just remember: any place for text is a place for online marketing. (Also: Don’t talk about Fight Club.)

search engine marketing

If you work for a search engine agency, you probably hate nofollow tags.

These loathsome elements reside within HTML link tags, signifying, in plain language: “Hey Google, please do not take this link into account when ranking pages.” There goes your backlink.

(Nofollow tags can be very valuable to webmasters looking to streamline their internal linking for a better site representation on Google. But for off page SEO, they’re pretty much bad news.)

Nofollow tags are commonly used by services vulnerable to SEO spam, particularly social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and MySpace. But, as many search engine marketing experts have speculated, Google might actually be following some nofollows — namely, the nofollows associated with important social networks. Like Twitter.

SEOmoz recently explored the potential value of Twitter’s nofollow links. The experiment ended with an optimistic conclusion — that listing the URLs of new pages on Twitter tends to get them indexed quickly.

What could this mean for search engine marketing? That nofollow links might not be such a waste of time. Go forth and tweet!
